The Duchesses were intended as & became the premier locomotives on the LMS's main route, the West Coast Main Line. They remained the ultimate British express passenger steam locomotive until the end of steam when they were replaced by inferior & much more expensive diesel locomotives.

Many detailed changes occurred during the Duchesses introduction between 1937 & 1948.
The first batch of Duchesses consists of all the curved front locomotives. These were never streamlined with the exception of 46242 City of Glasgow which was built as a streamliner & after having its streamlining removed originally had an open front end but was severely damaged in the Harrow crash of 1952. This accident also involved two other locomotives, Jubilee 45637 Windward Islands & recently rebuilt former "Turbomotive" 46202 Princess Anne. Only 46242 ever ran again & when rebuilt recieved a curved front end like the none streamliners.
6249 to 6252 entered traffic with streamlined tenders which were gradually de-streamlined in stages but always had differences to the originally none streamlined tenders as fitted to 6230 to 6234.
Quite early in their working lifes 6230 & 6231 exchanged tenders with streamlined Duchesses & retained these tenders to the end & are modelled as such.

The next batch of Duchesses will feature de-streamlined locomotives. These will be some from 46225 to 46229 & 46235 to 46248. The original five blue streamliners will not as yet be included or 46253 to 46257 because of various differences to those I've already done or plan to do. I will also be adding new liveries with each new batch of locomotives.

Livery Details
The Duchesses carried many liveries of which so far I've done three.Of note is the fact that only 6233 Duchess of Sutherland ever carried LMS Crimson Lake whilst fitted with smoke deflectors.6234 Duchess of Abercorn was painted experimental blue/grey at the same time it was fitted with deflectors & is modelled in its final condition whilst not having deflectors.

Tender Variations
There are many variations in the Duchess tenders although they are basically the same design.
The three types introduced so far are (4) fully de-streamlined high cut welded tender (5) none streamlined low cut welded tender & (6) part welded/part rivetted none streamlined high cut tender
Each locomotives tender type fitted is shown at the end of the locomotives description.
