The Hughes "Crab" 2-6-0 was the LMS's first succesful design and was used at first on all but the heaviest expresses & freights. As the Royal Scots & Patriots entered service the Crabs were used mainly for freight but also still did a lot of lighter passenger train work. The locomotives were very tough & reliable outlasting many more modern locomotives. A few lingered on until 1967, the penultimate year of steam.
The first 100 of a total of 245 were turned out in LMS crimson lake, the rest in lined LMS Black. The earlier locomotives were carrying this livery by 1933.Following that was plain black applied to any locomotives repainted after the start of World War Two.In BR days lined or unlined black was the standard livery throughout.
They were fitted with flush sided fowler tenders without coal rails at first.Gradually following tender swaps & surplus tenders from other withdrawn locomotives more gained coal rail fitted and sometimes raised rivetted tenders.
Tenders are available in three versions, flush rivetted with(AZ) or without coal rails(A) & raised rivetted with coal rails(AZR). The only exception to this is the LMS crimson lake liveried locomotives which are only available flush rivetted with(AZ) or without coal rails(A) tenders.
